Summary

When Katy’s mother dies, she is left reeling。 Carol wasn’t just Katy’s mom, but her best friend and first phone call。 She had all the answers and now, when Katy needs her the most, she is gone。 To make matters worse, their planned mother-daughter trip of a lifetime looms: two weeks in Positano, the magical town Carol spent the summer right before she met Katy’s father。 Katy has been waiting years for Carol to take her, and now she is faced with embarking on the adventure alone。

But as soon as she steps foot on the Amalfi Coast, Katy begins to feel her mother’s spirit。 Buoyed by the stunning waters, beautiful cliffsides, delightful residents, and, of course, delectable food, Katy feels herself coming back to life。

And then Carol appears—in the flesh, healthy, sun-tanned, and thirty years old。 Katy doesn’t understand what is happening, or how—all she can focus on is that she has somehow, impossibly, gotten her mother back。 Over the course of one Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman before her。 She is not exactly who Katy imagined she might be, however, and soon Katy must reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young woman who does not yet have a clue。

Ridiculously good。 Finished it in 3 days。

I understand why this book was a hit。 It does a great job of conveying a luxurious, romantic sense of place of the Amalfi Coast of Italy: the landscape, the food, the charm of a slower life there。 It's about a mother and daughter who were best friends and I can relate to that too。 But the heroine was so privileged and sort of stunted。 She couldn't function without her mother。 She brought antique silk dresses on her vacation and no water bottle。 She buys everything new。 It's a very consumerist, s I understand why this book was a hit。 It does a great job of conveying a luxurious, romantic sense of place of the Amalfi Coast of Italy: the landscape, the food, the charm of a slower life there。 It's about a mother and daughter who were best friends and I can relate to that too。 But the heroine was so privileged and sort of stunted。 She couldn't function without her mother。 She brought antique silk dresses on her vacation and no water bottle。 She buys everything new。 It's a very consumerist, self-indulgent fantasy and she's one of those heroines that everyone thinks is so beautiful and special; "she has that certain sort of something。" Sort of like the chosen one trope in children's books。 For me that was a big turn-off。 Predictable ending。 But I did read it all the way to the end。 。。。more

4。5 because well…。 It’s about Italy, Italian food, love, and takes place in Positano which we have visited! Oh did I mention。。 it’s about Italy!!! 😄

A bit of a far fetched premise but I think I liked it because of how special my mother was to me。 The author always tells a good story。

Sharon Rednor

A creative idea for a story, with a good message but really lackluster execution averages out to a 2 star rating。

I absolutely loved this! I feel like everyone can relate to the fear of losing a parent or anyone that you are super close to and I found myself getting a little emotional when reading about Katy’s grieving process。 I started reading without knowing anything about it and was shocked to find that this isn’t the light-hearted, fun Italian adventure I thought it would be, it is just so much more。 I’m really happy I picked this up!

Mixed feelings between 3 and 4 stars, but at the end it was a 4。 I never felt this sort of strong attachment to my mother, so that seemed a little over the top。 On the other hand, I have a daughter named Katie; but I hope she doesn't fall apart when I'm gone。 And, honestly, it was jarring when Katie "gobbled" a glass of wine。 That's a term I only associate with eating, not drinking。 Mixed feelings between 3 and 4 stars, but at the end it was a 4。 I never felt this sort of strong attachment to my mother, so that seemed a little over the top。 On the other hand, I have a daughter named Katie; but I hope she doesn't fall apart when I'm gone。 And, honestly, it was jarring when Katie "gobbled" a glass of wine。 That's a term I only associate with eating, not drinking。 。。。more

I loved the vivid descriptions of Italy。 The plot didn’t thrill me, although not terrible。

Martha

Woah。 This was really good!!!

I read this book super quickly because of how realistic and descriptive it is。 It really transported me to Italy! I even ordered pasta to eat while I read this book because the author was constantly discussing amazing meals on this vacation。 This is such a great summer read。

A nice taste of magical realism。 I loved how the setting was like another character in the story。 The "happy ending" was welcome but it felt clumsy。。。a little dropped in。 A good distraction for any emotional reader。 A nice taste of magical realism。 I loved how the setting was like another character in the story。 The "happy ending" was welcome but it felt clumsy。。。a little dropped in。 A good distraction for any emotional reader。 。。。more

3。5 stars - I feel like the story could have been better but so many things were repeated about Katy’s mother and how she felt about her。 A good quick read!

I enjoyed this book! For starters, the book was SO well written。。。 I felt like I was physically and mentally in Positano, eating the delicious homemade meals and soaking up the Italian sun。。。 so bravo to Rebecca for really setting this book up beautifully。I love the whole "travel to find yourself" concept of this book, Katy's growth by the end was beautiful and fairly inspirational to those who may be stuck in a life of familiarity or just quite boring。。。 I thought the mother daughter context wa I enjoyed this book! The way Carol exerted herself onto Katy and Katy's life never felt like too much this entire time? It really all came across from the lens of "mother always knows best"? Katy has said numerous times that she could not function without her mother because her mother took care of it all for her。。。 I found that to be a very concerning familial relationship throughout the book, even though the book didnt paint Carol out negatively like that。。。 In my opinion, a major part of why Katy needed to take this trip after her mothers death and why she made herself so self-deprecated, was because she was so traumatized by the realization that she's alone and had no way to prepare herself for all that was taken care of for her。 That is just how I perceived it。If you could get past the kind of relationship that I saw it as, and maybe saw it in a more light-hearted way than I did, you'd absolutely love this book。 The overall message was cute and sweet。 。。。more

Strong sense of place, great summer book if you want to escape to Italy。 Mixed feelings about the main character。 Read if you enjoy mother/daughter stories。 CW death of a parent。 Would recommend to grades 11+

This woman’s only personality trait was being obsessed with her Mom。 Seriously she had nothing else going on

3。5 stars。 Honestly, I didn’t really like the main character。 But I LOVE Italy and the imagery of Positano’s beauty kept me turning the pages。

Rosie Tran

I read it in 2 days which means I definitely enjoyed it but nothing about the characters made me feel attached。 It was a nice story, cool twist, but I just didn’t love it。

3。5⭐️ managed to read 2 books in a row about grief with the loss of a family member! i listened to the audiobook read by lauren graham and found it to be a sweet and short read! i loved the conclusion and descriptive setting in italy, but the magical realism aspect wasn’t my favorite here。

Perfect beach read!

An utterly forgettable 7+ hour zone-out。 Would not recommend。

Loved this book! Now I’m dying to go to Positano!

Bailey

This was a miss for me。 I don’t feel like the story was connected very well and the whole time travel but internally “fit” or make sense。 Just felt forced。

Kayla

A light-hearted love letter to Italy。 Beautiful scenic descriptions that will both transport you and keep you turning the page。 Explores topics of grief and losing a parent, the complexity of mother-daughter relationships, and what it means to maintain a sense of self as a woman in motherhood。

Hannah Huff

I wanted to really love this one, but found myself extremely frustrated and annoyed by Katy’s unhealthy attachment to her mother。 I do love the element of a bit of magic in Serle’s books。 The descriptions of Italy brought back so many memories for me。 It was an easy read , but this one was just ok。

Susan Martingano

I really enjoyed this book。 Made me want to book a trip to Italy!

Paige Whitt

Slow read and if you have a close relationship with your mother, it can be a hard read as well but so worth it!
